World of Music

Each song comes from somewhere, something inspires it, something comes about that triggers it and makes it leap forward, ready to be born! Creating music and listening to each instrument call out “Listen to me, I am here, play me now,” was thrilling! Creating music has been the most fun time! In the next life, I’ll know where to begin!

About Beverly’s Music

Music is something we all share. I really cannot fathom an exception. The lyrics of one of my songs say: “I’m not from one place in the world, but from any place, my language is music.” I have always believed that music is a vulnerable spot we all have, it reads us and reveals us by bringing our emotions to the surface, in a smile, or sentimental tears.  Music taught me Spanish. The Lyrics of “Amor en el Aire,” by Rocio Durcal, were the first Spanish words I ever spoke. I sang the song from top to bottom and didn’t even know what I was saying. Music…any form, is food for our soul and it’s impossible to imagine life without it.

I was over forty when I began composing music and was immediately told, “Forget about it, you don’t stand a chance, you are way too old for that industry. It’s all about skin!” I laughed, “Yeah! I’m still alive and I’m going to do it!” I did, I had no choice. Rhythms were beating my brains in and it was too much to ignore. I couldn’t sleep. Songs flooded my every moment arriving neatly packaged, lyrics with every note of every instrument. The sounds taunted me until I could deny them no longer and then I opened the door. I would run for my recorder and grasp the moment. By recording the words and humming the melody I was able to capture the essence of the new song. It was wonderful, spontaneous and a pure act of spiritual freedom. Married, with four children, two dogs and yet I was FREE!

Composing music begins at a very specific time in my life. My family had just returned to the United States after eighteen years in Caracas, Venezuela. Our return had been untimely and forced by circumstance. It had come about as we accepted that our third and special child, Tommy, needed to be nurtured by an educational environment that did not yet exist in Venezuela. In this aspect, the country was indeed a third world nation and Tommy couldn’t wait for them to get their act together. Determining that a return to the United States, where opportunities abounded for Tommy, was only the right thing to do and promptly set in motion our journey home. Venezuela was beginning to enter its Chavez period. Little did we know, as we left the country, that Venezuela was about to enter one of its darkest periods in its history. Chavez became president in 1999, changed the constitution, eliminated Presidential term limits and has never relinquished the Presidency since. The country of Venezuela has fundamentally changed, and its people have changed with it. Poverty prevails, and the anger brought by oppression lies just beneath the surface, reflecting itself in heightened criminality. Social divide has caused classism and a populace that was friendly, regardless of social stature, has now become bitter.

After leaving Venezuela, I missed the country, I missed my friends, and this longing was the main thrust to my initial compositions. In a few years, I composed lyrics and music to over a hundred songs, and from them four albums were made.
