The Secrets of Feelings
Often you’ll hear an artist say that a primary purpose for painting is to provide the spectator with color and share nature. In reality, in art like in everything else, the artist harbors a great self-interest. Naturally, the painter wants to share his work and even more so wants to sell it, however, most gratifying overall is the painter’s ability to seal a moment in time. Each painted image is for the artist a moment as if set in stone. Location, smells and feelings evoked while painting are trapped, permeating the canvas, for as long as the artist lives. Those, “secrets of feelings,” belong to the painter exclusively. They cannot be bought nor shared no matter how much the viewer enjoys or appreciates the image, and they are only revealed in the subtle smile that dances upon the lips of the artist.
Painting takes me to a place where I am at peace and content. As I search for harmony on the canvas, my mind reviews daily issues and soul searches. Painting puts me in a good place. Of the various disciplines within painting, it is the figure which mostly calls to me. To paint someone’s likeness gives me a joy which only increases when I see recognition and pleasure in the recipient’s expression. Oh! To capture a moment in someone’s life and forever show the light in their eyes is a gift, and I am grateful for the bit that has been given to me.
So, enjoy my paintings and if there is a face in your life, a posture, a twinkle in someone’s eyes that needs to be perpetuated, needs to be held in time, tell me about it and with oils we’ll make that happen!
